My fail experiment

All is not bed of roses in my garden. My love for temperate flower has led me to start experiment with it.  These are the conclusion:-

Total failure:  Freesia never sprout, Ranunculus sprouted in the fridge, it dried up slowly after i brought it out, delphinium & larkspur never germinate

Ranunculus

Failure is partially contribute by neglect during my illness: Hollyhock, foxgloves (Aphid love it), statice.

Statice

Failure because i do not know how to care for it beyond germinating it:  Nigella damascene, Pride of Madeira

Pride of Madeira

Failure because i sow it at wrong time: Sweet pea, it grows for about one metre before heat kills it

  1. Hollyhock actually does better in hot dry weather. It just the seeds need a bit of pre-chilling to break seed dormancy sama sifat dengan foxglove. Kalau tanam tempat yang damp hollyhock mudah sakit. Diana kena tunggu 18 months dia berbunga sama dengan foxglove. But surprisingly, once the plants are well established very heat and drought tolerant especially hollyhock. Hollyhock kami dah withstand heat wave lebih 40 degrees banyak kali for years tak pernah mati with neglect. Jiran- jiran tropical plant pula yang mati duduk di sebelahnya. Foxglove does better in partial shade during hot weather. Hollyhock likes full sun and did not appreciate it when I put some in partial shade. Yang dekat partial shade pula mati.
Oh tak pe cuba-cuba lagi. Saya pun banyak failure menanam ni. Sometime took me several years to understand them and trick them to get it right.
    Good Luck.
Thanks for helping me with the amaryllis. Bought heaps of it this week bulbs and seedlings. Since I can't afford to buy the double blooms bought seedlings instead.
Maybe you can ask Farhani, one of the commenters in my posting who lives in Putrajaya and had daylilies blooming in her garden.
Saya lupa pula daylilies bukan bulb tapi tubers. Pernah beli sekali dulu.

  2. Hollyhock dgn foxgloves ni i rasa blh hidup kat malaysia, seed dia senang nak germinate, tapi aphid sangat suka, dia mati hari tu pun sbb i tak larat nak pick and squeeze aphid tu, i tak suka guna racun.

i rasa yg berbunga kat putrajaya tu rainlily bukan daylily, perangai daylily ni sama dgn iris, dia nak cuaca sejuk untuk berbunga. Diana tau ke nama blog Farhani ni? Dia pun ada komen kat blog i tapi i tak tau nak cari blog dia. Kalau ada tolong bagi . Tq

    1. Aphid tak kacau pula hollyhock dan foxglove. Cuma hollyhock kadang-kadang daunnya alami rust yang dekat kebun saya ni. Ada pernah one season one of the plants bloom masa cuaca more than 40 degrees C.

Diana baca actually semua daylily is edible cuma sebab sekarang ni people tengok more on ornamental. Tapi tak tahulah betul ke tidak.

    2. Baik beli seedling, seeds berisiko, i semai hippeastrum seeds tak pernah bercambah. Tanam seedling, nanti nak balik malaysia besarlah bulb dia. Macam saya kalau bunga yang mahal2 tu saya beli seedling je, jaga cukup makan minum besarlah dia, kira mcm jaga anak juga lah.

Sebenarnya tak sampai hati nak mkn putik bunga yang cantik2 tu, Tapi rasanya kalau ada ladang masa tu bolehlah makan:-)))

  4. Saya pun beli kat cameron highland, kuning dgn oren dah 8 tahun pelihara tak pernah berbunga, nak kata mandul masa beli tu tengah berbunga:-) Daylily memang blh hidup kat sini tapi nak berbunga tu dia nak cuaca sejuk, kalau Lousiana iris tu peluang nak berbunga tu lagi tinggi.
